OUR FIRM’S VALUE

Why We Practice Immigration Law and Business Law

I practice immigration law because I am an immigrant. I am just like the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) kids. I empathize with them since I was brought over by my parents when I was nine years old while my father was a struggling foreign student. My younger brother, sister and I had no choice, no input, and no concept of leaving Korea, where we were born. We did not speak a word of English at the time. We ended up in a school in a very poor neighborhood in Chicago (now gentrified) and attended Mulligan Elementary school, where most of the students were African-American. When President Obama enacted the DACA program, it was a god-sent gift. My heart goes out for all the DACA applicants who have felt marginalized simply because of lack of immigration status. My heart goes out especially for those “kids” who don’t qualify because they arrived after a certain age in life or after an arbitrary cutoff time. A piece of me is in every DACA application that I file.

I don’t know how we obtained our PR status but somehow we obtained it through my father’s employment. During high school, I became a US Citizen by naturalizing. In those days, one had to have two US Citizen witnesses who could attest to one’s moral character. I dragged couple of my friends to INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) for my citizenship interview. To this date, I thank these friends who missed school to help me obtain my US Citizenship. To be a US Citizen is both an honor and a responsibility that many native born US Citizens do not appreciate. Thus, I encourage all my permanent resident clients to apply for US Citizenship as soon as they are eligible and to be responsible contributing members of this society while being faithful to their heritage.

I also practice business law because many immigrants have difficulty in securing employment because of lack of English skills or immigration status. Therefore, they decide that the best method for providing for their families is in starting small businesses such as driving taxis, operating delis, cleaners, or convenience stores. I have helped many of these small businesses grow into medium-sized businesses and assisted them in times of struggle with contracts, leases, financial and regulatory issues. That is one of the reasons why I became a founding member and a director of a community bank, Unibank, that focuses on helping minority-owned small business owners. I can sympathize and relate to small business owners since I am a business owner/entrepreneur myself. I help small business owners with legal advice and with business advice and am thrilled when I see their businesses grow and prosper. I can also assist with such business owners in transferring the wealth to their descendants to take the business to the next level.
